Our own sleep journey...

I know i'm not the first to post on sleep issues...figured i'd just join the group :-) When noah was born, we had very little sleep issues.  From the birth board at prg.org i followed guidelines from the articles of Tizzie Hall  - Save our Sleep from about 8wks old. They worked and Noah was STTN by 3.5months, from 7:30pm-7:45/8a.m. His sleep cues were (and still are) easy to read. Bedtime routine was bath, feeding, lullaby, then to bed, swaddled. Around a month and a half later, he was having nothing to do with being swaddled so we stopped and all was well again.

A month later, he wasn’t sleeping as well and so I started swaddling him again and voila…back to STTN.  Here we are today, 8 months old, full of mobility, standing, crawling, rolling, and breaking free of the swaddle. I realize that I have not taught my baby how to soothe or settle himself back to sleep. So when his arm comes free, he wakes, cries and is difficult to resettle unless nursed back to slumber at times. I haven’t taught him anything in terms of sleep and I feel like a total failure and discouraged about it because it now takes 30mins-1hr to settle down for a nap and after 2hrs of sleep at bedtime he is awake, crying.

There is the odd night of good solid sleep, but last night, was a different story. Frown So this is Day #1 of weaning from the swaddle. We have left the right arm out to start during his naps today. This morning he settled ok, but for the 3pm nap, it was trying. I’m torn whether or not to totally swaddle or continue the 1 arm out tonight at bed time. (FYI, I think I know what I have to do but I feel like crap when I don’t sleep either) I’m currently ready Good Night Sleep Tight and hope to gleam some pointers from there on how to teach my baby to sleep. Also, hopefully by starting this bloggy thing, some of you experienced or even new moms will offer some tips on what helped you.   Hopefully this is a short journey in the many ahead.Smile
