Babies & Toddlers - Stories and advice from and for Ontario moms and experts

Moms really do know best. Especially when it comes to babies & toddlers. It's easy to forget how many questions you had when your baby was first born. That means if you have some expertise, this is the place to share it. :)

Just a few ideas of what you could share for future moms to read...
:: Share your baby's eating/sleeping/feeding/diaper schedule so that future mom can know what to expect. (For example, my babies ate every 2 hours for the first month and every 3-4 hours for the next 3 months...)
:: Tell the world how you got your 8 month old to sleep through the night! Finally.
:: How long did you boil bottles and soothers, etc.

Write articles to get things started.

Time for a Change? Cloth Diapers

Submitted by MomtoaQT. Article from www.eartheasy.com

Time for a change!

Diapers may not be an important part of most peoples' lives, and even parents with young children deal with diapers for only a few years. The environmental impact of the vastly popular disposable diaper, however, affects us all and is a problem which won't go away.

It 's estimated that 10,000 tons of disposable diapers are tossed into landfills each day. They can take up to 500 years to decompose! The manufacture of disposables uses over 1 million metric tons of wood pulp and 75,000 metric tons of plastic each year. Disposables are the diaper of choice for over 80% of North American parents.

Getting a Father to Help More With a Baby

by Rick Hanson, Ph.D. and Jan Hanson, L.Ac.

It's been three months since the baby was born, but my husband still holds her like she was made of nitroglycerin and gives her back to me as soon as he can. He avoids changing diapers by saying that he's no good at it because she always cries -- no wonder, since he's a little rough and awkward -- and heaven help us if I want him to walk her so I can get a little sleep.

Developing a Handwashing Routine !

Try these creative parenting strategies to motivate your child:

. Forget boring clear soaps or everyday soap bars - use fun, foamy or colourful soaps

. Fill the sink with bubbles when you lather up with soap.

. To make sure your child spends enough time soaping up, try counting to 20 together or singing your child's favourite song. Or, make up your own song and sing along.

Child Developmental milestones

I care for a 2 year old girl who, when I first met her had no verbal skills at all, and very few sounds...in the last few weeks she has started to make more sounds and yesterday said Hi..and continues to say it lol.Today she said ohoh when she dropped a toy...so I started to research the developmental milestones that 'experts' think a child should reach by a certain age... Just my opinion but as far as I'm concerned a 2 yr old should have some words.. I found this little test

How Do I Know If My Child Is Reaching the Milestones?

Here is a checklist that you can follow to determine if your child's speech and language skills are developing on schedule. You should talk to your child's doctor about anything that is checked "no."

Concerns about bag slings

I found this article really scary and thought I'd share it with all of you...

Potential Dangers of Bag Slings

With the majority of fabric carriers it takes only a few minor adjustments to get baby safely and comfortably positioned (see the article "Correct Positioning") however, it appears that ‘bag slings’ have several significant design flaws that could place an infant at risk of respiratory distress or oxygen deprivation.

How to make co-sleeping safer

In light of the conversations we've had recently on co-sleeping, I stumbled upon this article that I thought might be worth having for us to review..  and while a lot of it can be common sense, there are some interesting ideas here.
